The PCI-3127 is a PCMCIA-form factor TDR that can be used to identify and locate failures in installed wiring and cable systems. The instrument can make high resolution TDR measurements on circuits up to 96,000 feet (~30km) from your Windows XP notebook computer or PC using a low-voltage non-destructive test signal.
Applications
- Troubleshooting cable and wiring systems:
- Identifying and locating open and short circuits
- Locating grounded conductors
- Locating moisture intrusion
- Identifying areas of insulation damage
- Geotechnical (soil moisture, monitoring earth movement, groundwater detection)
- Faulty taps and un-terminated line in LAN and CATV networks
Measurement Overview
- Single Ended Measurement; conductor-to-conductor, conductor-to-shield, or conductor-to-ground
- Measures circuit impedance (Z) versus time and calculates distance using the velocity factor for the circuit being tested
- User-defined range, quantity of data points and quantity of waveform averages
- Range: Maximum range 96000 ft (30 km)
- Digital Resolution: 1024 vertical values (10 bit) for rho; horizontal resolution is a function of the sampling rate.
Hardware Kit
- Step pulse TDR with 1 nanosecond nominal rise time
- Programmable amplitude up to 5Vpp into 50 ohms
- 50 ohm characteristic impedance
- Built-in warm-up timer provides stable measurements
- Extended Type II PCMCIA form factor

- 40 foot (12 m) RG-58 test lead included
Software
A variety of software applications are available depending on the requirements. The Virtual Instrument Software provides for an easy selection of set-up parameters, with provision for automated data analysis. A library of modules and drivers are available to integrate the TDR Card into your own custom application.
- Virtual operating panel operates under Windows 2000/XP/7/8
- TDR signatures can be saved to the host computer’s hard drive – thousands of signatures can be stored
- Up to eight (8) waveforms can be superimposed for analysis
- Cursors are provided for measuring time, distance, point impedance and return loss
- The user can zoom the display (x-axis only, y-axis only, x-y box, at a point) and pan displayed waveforms
- Built-in cable library contains velocity and characteristic impedance values for most standard industrial and military cable types; the user can define new entries in the library
- Optional libraries (DLLs) available to help integrate with the PCI-3127 into larger test systems and to perform automated interpretation of the waveform
